Principal's Message

Bergenfield High School is committed to providing a quality education for all of its students with a variety of educational and career options. We provide the skills necessary to pursue a college degree, or to enter a skilled trade or career.

Bergenfield High School was voted in 2010 the “Most Improved High School” in the state of New Jersey by New Jersey Monthly Magazine. We are very proud of this accomplishment and are committed to improve more, and be recognized with the best high schools in the state.

Academically, Bergenfield offers standard course offerings, along with Honors and Advanced Placement courses in most disciplines. Honors classes are offered in Art, English, Foreign Language, Mathematics, Music, Social Studies, and Science. Advanced Placement courses are available in Art, Economics, English, History, Computer Science, Mathematics, Modern Language, Music, Psychology, Chemistry, Biology, and Environmental Science. Finally, we offer our S.T.E.M program, (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) which has been running for three years and our Television Production program.

Bergenfield students can earn up to fifteen college credits through a collaboration program with Fairleigh Dickenson University and Dominican College in the areas of Biology, Biochemistry, English, US History, and Government and Politics. Dual enrollment opportunities are now available with Syracuse University, Ramapo College, F.D.U. and Bergen Community College.

Bergenfield students can earn up to 17 college credits in the Health Careers Academy through our partnership with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (NMDNJ) and Englewood Hospital. Students with an interest in the medical profession can prepare themselves for entry into nursing schools or can become certified as a technician in a hospital setting.

Our Ninth Grade Academy serves as a positive transition for students from the Middle School to the High School. Students are assigned to a team of teachers who monitor their progress and help them achieve academic success.

All parents and students are given codes to monitor the student's grades and attendance through a program called Infinite Campus. Further, all Bergenfield High School teachers are currently using homeworknow.com to help students and parents keep up to date on their child's homework assignments.

Participating in extra-curricular activities is important to creating a truly memorable high school experience. Bergenfield offers a wide variety of clubs, organizations and athletic programs. Highlights include New Jersey Department of Education Best Practice award for our “Teacher Apprentice” program and” Breakfast with an Author” program. The student newspaper, known as “Bear Facts”, has consistently been recognized with awards in the field of scholastic journalism by universities, colleges, and professional organizations. This includes the Columbia Scholastic Press's Gold Medal in Writing for 25 consecutive years. Our Chemistry Olympics Team won 1st place in the state of New Jersey in 2011.

The Music Department has long maintained a tradition of excellence. Wind ensemble, jazz band, concert band, orchestra, choral groups, and more are available for students with an interest in music.

In the athletic department, BHS has moved to a new conference, The Big North. There are forty- eight different levels of boys and girls athletic teams. All of the academic and extra-curricular programs are folded around a student code of conduct that includes a respect for self, a respect for others, a respect for society, and a respect for the environment.

Bergenfield High School is committed to working as a partner with parents and with the community. Parents and community members are always invited to come to the school and see it in action.
